Twenty nine years after Isa Hayatou held on as president of the Confederation of African Football(CAF), he has been ousted as CAF president by Ahmad Ahmad, from Madagascar, who defeated Hayatou by 34 -20votes.
The election which was held in Addis Ababa on Thursday, has brought a change in the leadership of African football since 1988, when Hayatou first became president.
Ahmad becomes the seventh CAF president in the governing body’s 60-year history.
The departure of Hayatou is a huge change for African football and the 70-year-old will also lose his FIFA position and his place on the ruling council of world football’s governing body.
Hayatou’s hope of winning an eighth term in office was dashed after voting in the elections were counted, were he lost.
