AKWA IBOM GOVERNMENT TO CREATE NEW DUMP SITE

The Akwa Ibom State government has initiated moves to create a new dump site at Ntak Inyang, off Calabar-Itu Road, in Itu Local Government Area of the State.

Disclosing the information on Saturday during the monthly Sanitation exercise, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Waste Management and Sanitation Agency, Prince Ukim, said the current dump site located off Uyo Village Road in Uyo would only serve as a transfer station, where waste would be temporarily deposited for onward transfer to the new dump site at Ntak Inyang.

He stressed that access road would be created, to enable free movement of waste to and from the new dump site. He also said that a section of the new dump site would have equipment for waste sorting and recycling.

“We have identified a new dump site here. This location is quite ideal and is far from the capital city. So, there will be no disturbance to public life. All important facilities will be available here, including machine for waste recycling,” Ukim said while addressing journalists at Ntak Inyang new dump site.

The Ntak Inyang dump site will be accessible through the location of the Hausa Cattle rearers market popularly called Nassarawa market in Akwa Ibom State.

It can be recalled that the current dump site on Uyo Village Road has constituted a nuisance to the inhabitants of Uyo metropolis and is too close to the Akwa Ibom State Government House on Barracks Road.

Speaking with the Trail Reporters on Wednesday, an Uyo based environmental specialist Mr. John Ekanem said the relocation of the dump site from Uyo Village Road to Ntak Inyang axis is a welcome development since, according to him, “dump sites are not supposed to be located in the heart of town”.
