AKWA IBOM STATE JOURNALISTS DEMANDS FUNCTIONALITIES OF REFINERIES IN NIGERIA

Journalists in Akwa Ibom State, arising from a meeting, has made demands to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited to get refineries in Nigeria work.

The demands according to the Journalists are:

That NNPCL sets the prices of petroleum products in Nigeria.

1. Akwa Ibom State journalist seeks to know how the prices are determined by market forces of supply and demand.

2. That NNPCL Limited be absolved of direct responsibility for pricing, with the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NURC, and NMDPRA being identified as the key players in price regulation.

3. On oil theft issues, it was emphasized that the government should have a special court where the oil thieves can be tried speedily.

4. The roundtable also explored the pricing of petroleum products and the regulatory challenges NNPC Limited faces. It was noted that NNPC Limited itself is regulated by both the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission (NURC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

5. It was also stated in the round table that the NNPCL are currently building refineries in each state, making sure that each produce their own oil, currently the Port Harcout refinery is producing but not selling yet, they are watching the system to new sure they are ready to produce before announcing.

6. To reduce the burden on NNPC Limited, the media practitioners recommended that the company adopt more practical CSR initiatives, particularly in Akwa Ibom State.

7. Suggested areas for CSR include community development projects, environmental sustainability, employment and skills development, health and education programs, and partnerships with local stakeholders.

8. The roundtable also urged NNPC Limited to improve its communication by proactively sharing its plans and initiatives with Nigerians, rather than frequently being on the defensive.

9. The round table suggested that the NNPCL be proactive and also work hard by bringing up the Oil theft issue for the government to work on and also bring the oil tappers to justice.

10. Akwa ibom state Journalists also urged NNPCL to build goodwill and more relationship with the communities with Akwa ibom state and across Nigeria.
