Akwa United Football Club defeated Akwa Starlets FC 4-3 on penalties to win a record 8th Akwa Ibom state Federation Cup title on Sunday in Uyo.
The match which was played at the Uyo township stadium saw both teams parading their best stars.
The two teams played out a goalless draw after regulation time before Akwa United’s goalkeeper Emmanuel Iwu spectacularly saved two of Akwa Starlets spot kicks and his heroics handed the Promise Keepers their first trophy of 2017.
Speaking after the match, Coach Abdu Maikaba commended his players and said that winning his first trophy for Akwa United was a motivation for him and his team to win more trophies this season.
“We are grateful to God for this victory. It was a tough match, both teams wanted to win, but only one team can win at a time and this year, the winner is Akwa United”.
” The state’s Federation Cup title is my first trophy as a coach for Akwa United and by the grace of God, more trophies are coming our way this season “.
” This victory will encourage us to fight for more. Our fans and the good people of Akwa Ibom state deserve more and we will do our best to give them something bigger at the end of the season”.
The Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL campaigners will next be in action on Sunday May 21, 2017 against MFM of Lagos on a matchday 20 fixture of the League Management Company LMC.
