TO AVOID SENATE PROBE OF HIS PAST DEED AT TETFUND, INEC CHAIRMAN, PROF. MAHMUD STOPS DINO MELAYE’S RECALL

Few days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released a time table for Dino Melaye’s recall, following a petition from his constituents, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood has dropped the recall process.

INEC, despite a court order to maintain status quo and halt the recall, had said they were going ahead with it.

After all entreaties to the Chairman had failed, the senate decided to go a step further to probe the Chairman, a source informed Trail Reporters.

There are reports that Mahmood’s tenure at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) was shrouded in financial recklessness from 2007 when he was head.

We gathered that, with the threat of a probe, which could see Mahmood losing his position as the commission’s Chairman, he has ordered a stop to the entire process, while relying on a court injunction, whose hearing comes up in September.

Findings shows that, the Nigerian constitution is clear, that recall petition should be concluded in 90days. With the court injunction, when the court sits again, Dino Melaye’s recall process would have been an exercise in futility, a source said.

Some persons who spoke with our medium said, if INEC halts the process because of the fear of a probe of their chairman, the EFCC should be invited to wade in.

Efforts to speak with the Commission’s spokesperson were not successful at the time of this report.
