Election Tribunal: Victor Iyanam embarasses client over ridiculous corrections

…As parties adopt final written addresses

The National and State House of Assembly Election Tribunal, sitting today, September 13, 2019 in Uyo was thrown into some theatre of fun over the inexcusable slip of Chief Victor Iyanam, of counsel to the petitioners.

The court had convened for parties to adopt their final written addresses in the petition filed by the APC and their candidate challenging the election of Hon. Anietie Ekah as member representing Uyo state Constituency at at the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly.

The mild drama began when Chief Iyanam rose from his seat and pleaded with the court to amend the petitioner’s final address before adopting it. What was he to amend? Counsel went on to seek to replace the words Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara in several paragraphs of the address with the word Uyo and at all points blamed it on “technology”. It was then that the “officious bystander” participants, almost in a chorus exclaimed: Nkó ajem idia akwók Ikpóñ (meaning, you want to eat money alone). This was followed by a loud laughter from the audience.

There has been rumours that Chief Iyanam greedily took all the briefs for all the petitions for the APC in the state. In all the cases where the PDP has won so far, not less than five have been lost due to the negligence of Chief Iyanam on such very sorry instances as; wrong heading of the petition, absence of prayers on the petition and other vital but elementary requirements of a competent petition.

Chief Iyanam who was obviously embarrassed at the situation stood completely silent as the judges motioned to the audience to restore the sanctity of the court.

The parties adopted their addresses and Judgement was reserved for a date to be later communicated to the parties.

The court was however impressed by the Excellent representation of Chief Goddy Umoh, Esq of counsel to the 2nd Respondent, the PDP. Goddy Umoh, Esq is the current Legal adviser of the PDP in Akwa Ibom State.
