The Federal Government has approved a N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public service workers across all levels for six months, beginning November 2026.
The approval was contained in a Memorandum of Understanding titled ‘Resolutions Reached at a Conciliation Meeting Held at Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment Between the Federal Government and the Leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress on Tuesday, 27th October, 2026’.
The meeting was convened following renewed pressure from organised labour over workers’ welfare and cost of living.
According to the MoU, the government also approved payment of peculiar allowance arrears, effective May 1, 2026, in three equal instalments beginning November 2026.
The document further provides for settlement of 19 months outstanding allowances for health workers within three months from December 2026, and verification of hazard allowances for agricultural officers.
The resolutions were signed by Director-General of Budget, Tanimu Yakubu; NLC President, Joe Ajaero; Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Garba Abdul S.U.; and Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi.
However, the Federal Government and the NLC did not reach an agreement on the effective date of the new national minimum wage. Both parties agreed to establish a committee immediately to negotiate and determine the implementation date.
