Ahmed Rufa’i – Dutse
An operative of Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) shot dead a commercial driver, Hussaini Andaza, and injured a police sergeant working with the Dutse division, in Dutse, capital city of Jigawa State, on Friday.
The incident occurred when members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) protested to the headquarters office of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Friday morning.
According to Tribune Online findings, crisis started when FRSC officers started arresting motorists after mounting road block close to their office along Kiyawa road, Dutse, at the early hours of Friday.
An eye witness who begged for anonymity, said the FRSC blocked both sides of dual-carriage Kiyawa road, the biggest road in the capital city of Jigawa State.
The eye witness noted that the FRSC arrested some drivers including members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), a situation which provoked them and started demonstrators.
The eye witness stated further that this forced the FRSC officials to immediately alert the police for protection and the police arrived the scene in very good time.
It was also gathered that the FRSC called operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) started shooting sporadically into the air immediately they arrived the scene of the fracas.
In the process, the eye witness said “an officer of NSCDC shot dead a commercial driver, Hussaini Andaza, and injured a police sergeant working with the Dutse division.”
It was gathered that to avenge the killing of their member, the protesting NURTW members descended on the officers of FRSC and one of their operation vehicles was set ablaze.
As of the time of filling this report, a security meeting is going between officials of FRSC, NSCDC and the Police, while efforts to get official police reaction failed as the state PRO’s declined to speak, saying “the outcome will be made available to newsmen shortly.”
