A two-storey building under construction collapsed on Akinola Street, Fadeyi, Lagos, in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, killing one person and injuring three others.
The building is located close to Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress alert at 12:10 a.m. Its Cobra Response Team, dispatched from the Onipanu Base, arrived at the scene two minutes later and began rescue operations.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said construction workers were trapped under the rubble. Rescue teams reportedly heard groaning from beneath the collapsed structure, indicating that victims were still alive.
An excavator was deployed to support the operation. Three adult males were rescued alive and received initial medical care from LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to hospital. One adult male was recovered dead.
Operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Alagbon Division, also participated in the response.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the collapse had not been determined and authorities had not confirmed whether anyone else remained trapped.
LASEMA said relevant regulatory agencies would investigate the incident.
Oke-Osanyintolu condoled with the family of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery. He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to addressing unsafe construction practices and strengthening building monitoring and enforcement in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).
