The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Waste Management Agency, Prince Akpan Ikim , has stated that, the opposition members in the state are sabotaging the efforts of the agency in carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
Prince Ikim stated this, at a media briefing on Monday, February 12, 2019, in his office. He said, it was sad, that certain individuals within the state, for unfounded reasons, were neck deep in plots to foment crisis in the environmental sector.
“These unscrupulous elements are bent on deliberately dumping refuse at illegal corners within the Uyo metropolis to sabotage our efforts and eventually carry street protest against the agency.” The Chairman was quoted as saying.
According to him, the plot includes, the implanting of destitute at strategic locations and dump points to indiscriminately liter the capital city and portray the state as being dirty to give credence to the planned protest and its possible escalation to a full scale crisis. The whole essence is to give an impression that the state is unsafe.
Ikim also said, most corporate organizations and private residences engage the services of uncertified refuse collectors to manage their waste, without the approval of the agency, and warned that such act be discontinued forthwith.
