The University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, may institute legal actions against anyone further linking the jailed INEC returning officer, Professor Peter Ogban with the institution.
According to a highly placed source in the institution, Prof Ogban who is currently facing a 3 year jail sentence for rigging elections in two local government areas in favour of the APC senatorial district candidate in the 2019 Akwa Ibom North West election, was not in the employ of the University of Uyo.
The source said Prof Ogban on the contrary, taught in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Calabar in Cross River State.
“Our lecturers are honest and responsible and would not be involved in such sharp and ignoble actions.
“The University of Uyo under Prof Nyaudo Ndaeyo has zero tolerance for corrupt and indiscipline staffers.
“The authorities of the University are likely to defend the university’s integrity using legal options for media houses that are linking Peter Ogban with our University, despite knowing he works at University of Calabar”, the source maintained.
An INEC official in Uyo, when contacted however said there was nothing wrong in describing the culprit as a staff of the University of Uyo, since he was working there at the time of the crime in 2019.
He said the University would not have been miffed if the Professor did not get his fingers burnt in sharp activities.
“He came to perform the election duties as a lecturer in the University of Uyo and only recently transferred his services to University of Calabar.”
“If he was being celebrated for a major breakthrough in the sciences, would the University not adopt him for his ingenuity? Since they can accept his assets, they should bear his liabilities as well,” the INEC official told our reporter.
