Students of the Academic Hub at Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) have met with leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, and received advice on building credible careers, mastering news writing and making the most of their industrial training.
The interactive session took place on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo. It was facilitated by the Academic Hub’s founder and lecturer, Dr. Eneh John, who is also Special Assistant to the Governor on Media.
The NUJ officials present were the State Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John; the Vice Chairman, Pastor Margaret Moore; the State Auditor, Mr. Ndian Ime; and the Treasurer, Comrade Udeme Hosea.
During the question-and-answer session, a student and the writer of this report, El-Donai Enema, asked how journalism students could translate classroom knowledge and skills into meaningful contributions to society.
Responding, Comrade Nsibiet urged the students to cultivate a strong reading culture, learn from experienced journalists, gather information intelligently and communicate effectively. He identified consistent practice and self-confidence as essential to professional growth.
He also advised them to prioritise credibility and reputation over immediate financial rewards, stressing that a good name is fundamental to a sustainable career. According to him, journalism demands strong moral values, integrity and ethical responsibility.
The Vice Chairman, Pastor Margaret Moore, explained the inverted pyramid approach to news writing and its importance in organising information effectively. She also introduced the students to communication concepts, including the Agenda-Setting Theory.
The State Auditor, Mr. Ndian Ime, urged the students to approach their industrial training with commitment, discipline and a willingness to learn, and to use internships to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and newsroom practice. He also stressed the importance of time management and relationship-building in a successful journalism career.
The students expressed appreciation to Dr. Eneh John for facilitating the visit, describing it as an opportunity to learn, build professional connections and gain exposure beyond the classroom.
