The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, has urged students of Akwa Ibom State University to embrace practical journalism and develop their reporting skills.

He gave the advice on Thursday, October 29, 2026, during an interactive session with students of the AKSU Academic Hub at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo.

Comrade Nsibiet John emphasised the importance of practical experience, urging students to build self-confidence, write reports and submit them to experienced journalists for corrections and guidance.

“Journalism is just practical, and you must set your mind to do it,” he told the students.

He further advised them to prioritise professional reputation over immediate financial gains, stressing that credibility remains essential to success in the profession.

“Seek ye first the name and the profession, and every other thing shall be added unto you,” he said.

The students also raised concerns about the influence of politicians who own media organisations on journalistic independence. Responding, Comrade Nsibiet John acknowledged the influence of media ownership on editorial decisions, noting that journalists must understand the realities of the profession.

The engagement was facilitated by Dr. Eneh John, Special Assistant to the Governor on Media.

The students expressed appreciation to the NUJ leadership for the opportunity to gain practical insights into journalism.
