FEAR GRIPS RESIDENTS IN CALABAR AS SUSPECTED CULTISTS KILLS FRUIT SELLER

Tragedy struck in the ancient city of Calabar, the Cross River State capital yesterday, at about 7pm, when suspected cultists shot dead a fruit seller at new airport road by effio anwan street in the southern part of Calabar.

An eyewitness report who spoke with Trail Reporters, said, the suspected cultists numbering about ten(10 ) had stormed the area to allegedly rob residents; an eyewitness account further stated that residents had screamed “thief”, “thief”, when Ubong the fruit seller was said to have accosted and held one of the suspected cultists.

Unknown to him, the alleged gang members were after him after he had held one of them, they opened fire, killing him in the process. Residents of the area were said to have scampered for safety when the ugly incident occurred.

The police from the State were said to have arrived the scene moments after the sad occurrence where they took the corpse away.

Sources say Calabar has become a volatile area where anything goes with high rate of alleged criminal activities.

Efforts to speak with the Police Public Relations Officer in the State proved abortive as he did not respond to calls placed on his mobile phone.
